Alison Comish Thorne (1914-2005) was born in Chicago, Illinois. She received her Ph.D. in 1938 from Iowa State University in Consumption Economics and later taught at Utah State University. Mormons for ERA was officially organized in 1978 by co-founders: Hazel Davis Rigby, Maida Rust Withers, Teddie Wood, and Sonia Johnson.
